I Am No Julie Andrews

When I watch the Sound of Music I’m always struck by the variety of happy songs which have filtered into our cultural references, especially the song My Favorite Things. ?I mean who doesn’t have a few things that are so treasured that they couldn’t just sing about them? ?I am no Julie Andrews so I won’t be singing about a few of my favorite things, though I did write about them and share them over at igotmompower.com. ?And though I didn’t list them you all should know that chocolate and coffee are indeed two of my most favorite things of all.

As an aside, every time I hear the much loved song I always wonder about that Maria. ?It just seems to me that some of her favorite things could be ingredients to some kind of magic potion or spell. ?Read through these lyrics and tell me what you think?

Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens
Bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens
Brown paper packages tied up with strings
These are a few of my favorite things

Cream colored ponies and crisp apple streudels
Doorbells and sleigh bells and schnitzel with noodles
Wild geese that fly with the moon on their wings
These are a few of my favorite things

Girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes
Snowflakes that stay on my nose and eyelashes
Silver white winters that melt into springs
These are a few of my favorite things

When the dog bites
When the bee stings
When I’m feeling sad
I simply remember my favorite things
And then I don’t feel so bad

What are some of your favorite things? ?Do you like The Sound of Music and/or the song My Favorite Things? ?Is Maria really giving out the ingredients for a magic potion to cure bad feelings? ?Why isn’t chocolate on her list?

It’s been forever since I’ve seen it, but I do love The Sound of Music.

My favorite things? New music. A glass of wine. A good bowl of soup. A great conversation with a friend. An encouraging comment on a blog post that I was worried about publishing.
